Gwydion

Welsh
Trickster-mage of the Mabinogi whose cleverness makes and unmakes fates. creator of Blodeuwedd and tutor of Lleu.

“Cleverness can heal or harm. choose its aim.”

Trickster-mage of the Mabinogi whose cleverness makes and unmakes fates, creator of Blodeuwedd and tutor of Lleu.

Gwydion is the Welsh magician whose wit can heal or harm. He fashions Blodeuwedd from flowers, mentors Lleu, and outmaneuvers rivals with illusion. Yet his cleverness has consequences: lives are shaken by his schemes. Gwydion personifies the ambivalence of intellect, its power to create, deceive, repair, and wound.

As a devotional figure he urges craft to serve character. Use imagination, but not as a mask; study sorcery, but yoke it to justice. Under Gwydion’s tutelage, skill becomes service and stories become oaths. He is the patron of those who learn fast and must learn restraint faster.

Likely from Welsh root meaning “knowledge/poetry”; folk-etymologized as “born of trees.”
